Study on the emergence of Oropouche virus in Espírito Santo receives national award

A pioneering study on the emergence of the Oropouche virus in the state of Espírito Santo, developed within the scope of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), has received national recognition for its scientific relevance and contribution to public health.
The study was selected for oral presentation and received the Paulo Sodero Martins Award for Best Paper in the Field of Evolutionary Genetics, a distinction that highlights the scientific quality and originality of the research presented.
The presentation represented the Laboratory of Genomics and Viral Ecology (LaGEV/UFES) and was based on the study entitled “Genomic epidemiology of Oropouche virus’s emergence in Espírito Santo, Brazil (2024)”. The research analyzed epidemiological and genomic aspects of Oropouche virus circulation in the state, contributing to a deeper understanding of its emergence and spread in Brazil.
The findings reinforce the importance of genomic epidemiology and the integration of laboratory and epidemiological data for the surveillance of emerging viruses, particularly in scenarios of geographic expansion and increasing incidence of arboviral diseases.
The research that gave rise to this study was supported by the Espírito Santo Research and Innovation Support Foundation (FAPES) and by the Espírito Santo State Department of Health (SESA-ES), underscoring the relevance of public investment in science to address public health challenges.
The national recognition received by this work highlights the role of LaGEV and UFES in the production of high-impact scientific knowledge and in the training of qualified human resources in the fields of virology and genomics.
